The journey of a metal from being a raw material to a market finished product is full of repetitive mechanical processes. These operations ensure the high-quality output. These materials can be used in manufacturing products such as steel slabs. The slab is processed in order to get correct weight, width and thickness. Various stages of rolling mill require knowledge and experience to ensure a high quality product.

Process of rolling mill:

The product is heated in reheating furnace, rolled in a roughing mill, coil boxed, rolled in the finishing mill, cooled and then coiled.

Reheating furnace: The heating is especially important as it affects the properties of the material. If material is not heated sufficiently incorrect material properties will arise. This is due to carbides and nitrates failing to dissolve.

During the heating process and the transport to the roughing mill the chances for the hot material to react with the oxygen in the air are high. This leads to the formation of the mill scale consisting of oxide on the surface. If the oxide layer remains on the material during rolling, the oxide layer risks being rolled into the steel material. This can adversely affect the surface quality of the final product.

Cleansing:  In order to cleanse the surface, water is sprayed at high pressure and then sent to the roughing mill. The material must undergo a mill scale cleansing before rolling. This is done to remove traces of mill scale.

Roughing mill: Here, the material is rolled from its original thickness down to about desired thickness.

Then the coil is boxed and sent to the finishing mill where the thickness is further reduced and a correct profiled material is made then they are coiled and cooled. This is the market ready product.
